5 Youth wrestlers head to State

By Marc Remme

Faribault Daily News

Twelve-year-old Isaac Van Thomme has been there before, so when he and four of his Faribault Wrestling Club teammates compete at the Northland Youth Wrestling Association state tournament April 10-12 at the Rochester Mayo Civic Center, he has a good idea of what to expect.

“Don’t do the headlock, and wrestle smart,” Van Thomme said.

Van Thomme, Ryan Mullennex, David Tonjum, Charlie Chambers and Dylan Lippert each qualified for the state meet by placing in the top three at last weekend’s regional in Byron. Lippert finished in first place in the 81-85 pound weight class.

Lippert, in his third year as a wrestler, said he joined because a friend at daycare asked if he wanted to. Now, he’s excited about the chance to compete at state.

Chambers added: “I’m pretty excited to get medals and stuff.”

Coach Brad Babcock said there were 85 kids enrolled in the youth wrestling program in kindergarten through sixth grade this year. He said the goal is to reach 100 in the next year or two, which was where enrollment peaked during the Falcons’ most prominent years.

He said for these kids, already being in the top 16 in their age group in the state is a big deal.

“Taking five kids in the top 16 is pretty good,” Babcock said. “It’s a good experience ... to get them back there and see what it’s like.”

For each of these Faribault youth athletes, the thought of making a state appearance is exciting in different ways.

For Mullennex, it’s about already knowing he’s among Minnesota’s elite.

“Placing and knowing I’m in the top 16 in state (is the best part),” Mullennex said.
